San Leandro Welcomes Affordable Senior Housing
Ground Breaking of Eden Housing's Estabrook Senior Housing
Friday, May 1st at 12:00 noon
Seniors with low-incomes will have new apartments at affordable rents
San Leandro, CA - Committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing for seniors in the City of San Leandro, Mayor Tony Santos will join other elected officials, Eden Housing, and its supporters to celebrate the ground breaking of Estabrook Senior Housing, on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 12:00 noon. The event will be at 2103 East 14th Street in San Leandro, CA on the corner of Estabrook and East 14th Streets.
The ground breaking program speakers will include Assembly Member Mary Hayashi, San Leandro Mayor Tony Santos, Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker, Laurence Fergison of U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, Christine Carr of Silicon Valley Bank, Rich Gross of Enterprise, Gary Wolff of StopWaste.org, and Meriam Reynosa of the Office of Senator Ellen Corbett.
"The City of San Leandro has for decades worked very hard to expand affordable housing options for seniors," stated San Leandro Mayor Tony Santos. "As a city with one of the largest older populations in the area, we want to provide quality housing such as Estabrook Senior Housing for our seniors so that they can age in place in the town that they have known and loved throughout their lives and continue to contribute to the community. We have added some 300 units in recent years and we will continue to seek new housing opportunities to help us meet our housing goals. We appreciate our partnership with Eden Housing in helping to achieve some of the City's affordable housing goals."
"Estabrook Senior Housing will create an opportunity for low-income seniors in San Leandro to live in a high quality, supportive community setting," said Linda Mandolini, Executive Director of Eden Housing. "The resident services program that Eden Housing will provide is designed to help our senior residents to age in place and help them to live independently in a healthy and productive way."
Estabrook Senior Housing is designed for independent-living senior residents age 62 or older. Residents will pay 30% of their income to rent one of the 51 new apartments. This development is for seniors with incomes at or below 50% of the Area Median Income. Currently, that limit is $30,150 a year for one person, $34,450 for a family of two, or $38,750 for a family of three.
Estabrook Senior Housing will be developed utilizing the latest "green building" techniques and materials to create a model green building. The development was designed in accordance with the GreenPoints rating system, is designed to exceed Title 24 energy standards by a minimum of 15%, and will include solar hot water and solar photovoltaics to reduce energy consumption in our project.
The development site will include a three-story building comprised 50 one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom manager's unit. Community spaces that promote community-building, health and wellness for seniors will include a large community room that opens on to a courtyard, raised planter gardens, a computer room, library, exercise room, and theater. There will also be a third floor landscaped roof terrace.
