Apprenticeship Program Meets Workforce Demand

These days, with the hiring market so tight in the Bay Area, it is harder and harder to identify high quality staff to fill vacant positions. One way that Eden addresses this challenge is its apprenticeship program in partnership with Cal State University, East Bay. The objective of the Eden Housing Apprenticeship Training Program training Community Manager Apprentices to be skilled in the key phases of property management. Each Apprentice is matched with an Eden Community Manager to learn the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities of the role, from A to Z. In addition to shadowing their assigned mentor, the Apprentices also participate in learning sessions throughout their apprenticeship.

This program has been rewarding for both the Apprentices as well as the staff assigned as mentors.

“I think this is a very good program. I believe it gives students an opportunity to get to know the community manager role to see if this is something they would be interested in as a career. It also gives management an opportunity to receive feedback from students that they would not get from [other] employees,” said one mentor.

The program officially launched in 2018 and, Eden is proud to report the hiring of one of the founding apprentices, Blake. He is the Community Manager for one of Eden’s newest sites, Hana Gardens Apartments in El Cerrito. He shared his story at Eden All Company meeting in March.

“I feel really good about my role here in Eden, both as an apprentice and as a Community Manager,” shared Blake. “On a personal level, I never knew how all the cogs in the machine that makes Eden Housing work worked.”
