Name: Anshuman Chakravorty

What site do you volunteer at? Eden Lodge (San Leandro, CA)

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? Eden Housing was in in need of a "volunteer tech tutor." Since I am fascinated with technology and love to teach, I thought this would be the perfect volunteering assignment for myself. Also, I can understand the frustrations that the senior community might have in regards to the rapidly changing technology that we have had for the last two decades or so and I just want to help them better understand the incredible advantages that technology can have on our lives.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and any projects you have worked on. As a tech tutor, I volunteer about 2 hours of my time helping the residents at Eden Lodge with whatever tech issues they may be having that week or longer period. I assist them with trying to understand how to send email on their phones, how to attach various documents, how to navigate the new world of social media on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Most of the time, the residents are in need of understanding how to use their smartphones or tablets since using it is so different than using a laptop or desktop.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? Through this volunteer experience, I have learned that unlike my generation which gets frustrated and impatient quickly when technology doesn't provide us with the things we want or need at the moment, the residents at Eden Lodge are surprisingly patient when technology doesn't behave normally. Many a time, I have had to tell the residents to come back next week or the meet me the next time they are free to fix a tech issue they might be having. Courteously and respectfully, the residents understood and never got annoyed that I couldn't fix their tech issue that day.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? The residents at Eden Lodge are kind to me and never annoyed or visibly frustrated when I can't solve their tech issue.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I am a hobbyist and amateur photographer and love to shoot landscapes. I have also played cricket during my high school years in the Bay Area.
