Below is Eden Housing's Volunteer of the Month

Name: Juanita Miteff

Property: Belle Terre

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? Being new to the area, I was looking for an opportunity to use my skills teaching group fitness classes in a community near to where I stay. I was fortunate that Eden Housing was my first port of call, as all the steps starting at applying through to giving my first class ran incredibly smoothly.

What have you done as a volunteer? Please describe your role and what you have worked on.  I teach a 1-hour low-impact aerobics/yoga fusion class once a week for the residents at Belle Terre in Lafayette.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? My answer is specific to fitness. Working with the residents at Belle Terre has been a good reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to exercise, so what works for one person will not work for another. This is especially true for mixed-ability classes. As such, I'm a big believer that a yoga pose or an aerobic move is only a suggestion, and that ample modifications should be offered to make the class as safe, inclusive, effective, and fun as possible for all of the participants.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? Sharing the joy of movement with the residents who attend my weekly class (especially my enthusiastic regulars who rarely miss a class!)

Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering?

  • Be committed and consistent. Approach a volunteer activity as you would a job. People count on you to be where you say you'll be, so communication with the residents and the service coordinator is key.
  • Go with the flow. You may have a set idea of how you would like the class or activity to look but then you are confronted with a need or a request which isn't something you had planned for. Adapt in the moment so that the residents get value from your time.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? My accent occasionally catches people off-guard, and it sometimes results in an amusing guessing-game along the lines of, “British? Australian? New Zealand?” In truth, it can sound a little bit like any of those because it's a South African accent! :-)
