Eden Volunteer of the Month - January 2017

Monique Chancellor at Ashland Village, San Leandro

We are so proud of the volunteers who choose to give their time to our affordable communities and residents. You can read other stories about our volunteers at Meet Our VolunteersIf you're interested in volunteering with Eden, please go to Volunteer with Eden Housing.

Name: Monique Chancellor

What site do you volunteer at? Ashland Village

Monique was nominated by Eden resident services coordinator, Darice Bridges, who said: "Monique Chancellor has been a resident at Ashland Village since 1988. She has been one of my most reliable residents that I can always count on to help out with anything I need, even if it’s at the last minute. She was the “lead volunteer” during our mobile food pantry over the summer months. Monique has previous experience working with the Alameda County Food Bank and she really helped us organize the flow of residents to make the distribution go much more smoothly than if I had to figure it out on my own. Serving 75-100 households a month isn’t an easy task, especially with some of the language barriers, but she implemented a system that made the Ashland Village Mobile Market a huge success."

What have you done as a volunteer?  All my life I have been groomed for volunteer service, and I have raised my family to do the same. I volunteer where I live, which is natural to me. I have done everything from facilitating vegetarian cooking classes, art & scrapbooking classes, to being the National Night Out face painter. This past summer I helped volunteer as a Liaison with Alameda Food Bank Pantry serving Ashland residents and community.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? My personal goal 15 years ago was to have a Market Pantry available for the Ashland residents, to my surprise, Eden Housing Ashland Village raised the bar when they brought on the Resident Coordinator position to the Ashland Village Campus. Ms. Darice Bridges has stepped it up in all areas of being a natural leader here at Ashland Village. She puts the human kindness in the equation for Eden Housing and us as residents. Current residents appreciate her, and will reciprocate by showing personal involvement with the community, like volunteering.
