Below is Eden Housing's Volunteer of the Month

Name: Jeff Loehr

Property: Monteverde, Orinda and Belle Terre, Lafayette

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? I was looking for an opportunity where I could apply some of my skills and interests.  I found this volunteer opportunity for someone who could help people with technology.  I spent most of my career in the software industry and really enjoy technology. I had heard great things about Eden Housing and the great things they do to provide wonderful residences for seniors.  This seemed like a perfect match for me and an opportunity to give back to others.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and what you have worked on. Working both at Monteverde in Orinda and Belle Terre in Lafayette, I have been helping residents better use their smart phones, tablets and computers.  Devices can be confusing for all of us and especially if you didn’t grow up with them.  They can also enhance your ability to communicate with others, both family and friends who don’t live close by.  Distant relatives and friends can better participate in each other’s lives by sending emails, pictures or even chatting over skype or face time.

Also, teaching residents how to do research about things they need help with can be very advantageous.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? It has been so wonderful meeting the residents of both facilities.  The thing I have learned more than anything else is that helping others and giving back is one of the most rewarding things we can do in life.   I believe that we are all connected in some way and helping others enhances our own humanity.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? When I retired after working many years in a very intense industry, the one thing I really missed was the people I worked with.  In my last 10 years of work, I worked with the most amazing team of people both personally and professionally.  While I have kept in touch with some of them, not seeing them every work day meant something was missing in my life.  So, one of my personal goals was to find an opportunity that would increase my social interaction during the week.  Eden Housing provides that for me and I really enjoy talking to the residences and learning about their life experiences.

Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering? We all have various skills, abilities and passions.  Find something that helps others and that you enjoy doing.  An excellent tool to do this is using the website, Volunteer Match.  You can enter your interests, skills and local area you would be willing to work in and the system will send you opportunities that match your criteria.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I love to travel and enjoy learning about wine and wine making.   I have taken two courses on viticulture, one in Napa and one in Lake County.  I have explored many of the wine making regions of California.  We are lucky to have perfect weather in California to produce some of the best wine in the world.
