Below is Eden Housing's Volunteer of the Month

Name: Alison Shirey, Bank of the West

Property: Multiple: Vandenburgh Villa, Eden Lodge, Cambrian, Brentwood Senior Commons, Alta Mira, Wisteria, Rosewood, The Altenheim, Carlow Court, Wicklow Square

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? At Bank of the West we have a strong culture of corporate social responsibility and getting involved with our local communities. In an effort to champion this, I embarked on a search for opportunities in my area and discovered Eden Housing. After reading Eden’s mission statement, I decided to reach out and see how my colleagues and I could make a difference.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and what you have worked on. I coordinate groups of colleagues to facilitate games of Financial Fraud Bingo across multiple Eden locations. Though similar to traditional Bingo, the game I developed uses terms and phrases instead of numbers in each square. For each term or phrase drawn, a brief discussion is held with the group to re-affirm key takeaways on financial elder abuse and fraud awareness.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? After every event I am left with a feeling of purpose and gratification. Being able to positively impact others is truly one of the best experiences. I have learned that it is important to give back whenever possible not only to improve the quality of someone else’s life but my own as well.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? I have met so many interesting people and connected with fellow colleagues/volunteers in a very rewarding way. It is always delightful when the event is engaging and I see people get animated with the game. I love being able to provide knowledge in the form of fun.

Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering? Get involved! It may seem like a daunting task at first, but once you jump in you will surely question why you didn’t get involved sooner. If you aren’t sure where to start, ask around or reach out to someone you know who can help steer you in the right direction.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I love to read. My to-read list is well into the triple digits and my home library is ever-growing. I enjoy science-fiction and fantasy novels as well as the classics. I also enjoy drawing and painting. I have an art degree from San Jose State University and have been known to doodle in the margins of almost any paper in front of me.
