Below is Eden Housing's Volunteer of the Month

Name: Thomas Ho

Property: Vandenburgh Villa

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? I have been visiting senior houses and hospital as a member of the Chinese Christian Mission East Bay Visitation team, so when I saw in the eBlast to my church that Eden Housing was looking for Chinese translator volunteers, I thought that might be something I could help with in my spare time.  An email to Eden Housing confirmed that.  It would only take an hour or two each month to do translation during the management-residents meeting at Rosewood Terrace, one of their properties in Union City.  After the first meeting as a translator there, I was invited to volunteer at their property next door: Wisteria Place.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and what you have worked on. Besides the real-time translation, I was also doing the notifications and handouts translation off site starting the month after.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? I was surprised when I arrived at one of the monthly meeting to find out that was the last meeting the resident service coordinator would chair, then I was so touched when I saw tears in the senior residents’ eyes as well as hers as they bid farewell to each other.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? Even though my involvement kept increasing and the time I spent increased proportionally, I still feel happy because I know that the more I do, the less misunderstanding between the management and the residents there would be, and life will be easier for both sides.

Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering? A big lesson for me: rewards come in different forms, not necessarily material-wise.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I have been earning my salaries over 30 years as a structural engineer, but I seldom have this gratifying of a feeling, that a beautiful relationship can be built between people despite their differences in age, language, race and cultural background.
