Eden Volunteer of the Month - March 2017

Laura Mercy at Tennyson Gardens, Hayward

We are so proud of the volunteers who choose to give their time to our affordable communities and residents. You can read other stories about our volunteers at Meet Our VolunteersIf you're interested in volunteering with Eden, please go to Volunteer with Eden Housing.

Laura Mercy is one of Eden Housing’s Financial Coach volunteers.

She is currently assigned to a resident named Bart and is working individually with him to help him achieve his financial dreams.

This is what Bart had to say about his financial coach: Laura is patient, supportive, consistent, and knowledgeable. I appreciate her consistency and willingness to give me an opportunity to actualize my financial goals. I have gained clarification of my money aims and strategies to help me manage my economic challenges. One of the useful techniques I’ve learned is to keep a tracking record system of my finances to help me reduce debt and prioritize basic spending needs.

Name: Laura Mercy, Financial Coach Volunteer

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing as a Financial Coach? I wanted to use my years of professional experience as a Finance Manager to help low-income families set and achieve their financial goals. I have reached a point in my life where I want to give back to the community and do what I can to support others.

Which site do you volunteer at? I coach a client who lives at Tennyson Gardens in Hayward.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and any projects you have worked on. I have helped my client get a better understanding of his spending and to develop a plan to reduce his debts and achieve his saving goals. I meet with him every week and we review together his expenses, and discuss actions for the following week. It helps him get more comfortable with the idea of a budget and more confident that he has the ability to succeed.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? I have learnt that listening is so important. You can learn a lot about a person by just letting them talk, and it helps strengthening the relationship with the client. I have been surprised by how hard people can be on themselves, but being a coach allows me to reassure my clients and show them how great they can be.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? I love volunteering for Eden Housing! This is my first time volunteering, and Lisa and Olga have been really helpful in training me. They also did a great job pairing me with my client, we work really well together.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? Every time I see a postcard that is funny, pretty or make me think of someone, I purchase it and save it. I have probably over 50 at home, and I randomly send them to friends and family for no specific reason but letting them know I think of them! In the era of technology, I think receiving a card in the mail is so exceptional :)
