Eden Volunteer of the Month - May 2017

Delleen LeVeau at Monteverde, Orinda

We are so proud of the volunteers who choose to give their time to our affordable communities and residents. You can read other stories about our volunteers at Meet Our VolunteersIf you're interested in volunteering with Eden, please go to Volunteer with Eden Housing.

Name: Delleen LeVeau

Site: Monteverde, Orinda

According to Shanna Paul (pictured on right), the Services Coordinator at Monteverde, Delleen is a “quiet storm.” She started out as a volunteer by asking if she could draw a diagram of the garden area and number the plots making it easier for her fellow residents to identify their area. Next, she began taking the minutes and attendance for the Monthly garden meetings and corresponding with Master Gardeners, the UC representatives who speak at the monthly meetings.

Next was the food distribution program.  Monteverde distributes 2- tons of food a week.  They partner with a local non-profit that requires the site to have reliable volunteers to receive and distribute the food.  Delleen did not hesitate to coordinate her fellow resident volunteers and to be the contact person for the deliveries and the standing farmers market deliveries received on Saturdays.  Delleen then took it one step further, she began to volunteer for the organization that donates the free food to Monteverde.  Every Saturday she spends her mornings bagging groceries to be delivered to various sites, homeless shelters, middle schools and churches. Then she heads home to Montverde to set-up for the food distribution for the residents.

In addition to this work, Delleen has taken the reigns of coordinating the Monthly resident forum onsite.  Delleen has recruited a resident to take the minutes and attendance while she mediates the meetings, always reporting back to Eden staff to discuss the topics that were brought up by the residents.  Delleen does all of this effortlessly, with a smile and no complaints.

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? What have you done as a volunteer?  I choose to volunteer here at Monteverde because I am a little impatient and wanted to get things started.  I have enjoyed gardening since I was a child and saw the opportunity to help start a garden for those residents that also wanted to grow their own vegetables.

Then we formed a resident forum and a year later the facilitator stepped down and no one else volunteered so I stepped in.  The forum is an excellent communication tool for the residents and I felt it needed to continue for the benefit for all of us.

I publicize and update our Resident Directory to maintain current emergency numbers along with resident information.

Our service coordinator investigated a program that we could receive produce and 5 of us volunteered to distributed the food once a week.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? I have learned a lot volunteering, mostly how good it feels to be able to give my time and effort to help others and how they appreciate it.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? What I like the best is the smile and thank you on the residents faces--priceless.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? Photography was a hobby I enjoyed.  I took many pictures on all of my vacations and was fortunate enough to have a dozen hung up in the hospital where I worked in Santa Barbara for 25 years.  I worked as a Staffing Coordinator, staffing 20 nursing units on a 24 hour basis.

I slalom water skied for many years, then took up sail boat racing with a team and then with my own boat around the Channel Islands and Ventura county.

I enjoy working with the computer and its many challenges.
