Below is Eden Housing's Volunteer of the Month

Name: Kim Doan-Lum

Property: Wexford Way, Dublin

Why did you chose to volunteer with Eden Housing? I was quite impressed with all the services Eden offers their residents at their housing developments. When I read about their financial coaching program, I thought it would be a good fit for me to use the skills I've developed from my banking career. In addition, I wanted to contribute to my own community in the Tri-Valley area, since I had worked for many years in the city of San Francisco.

What have you done as a volunteer?  Please describe your role and what you have worked on. As a financial coach volunteer, I work one on one with a resident to improve her money management and overall financial literacy. Weekly we meet to create a budget, learn strategies to save money and reduce debt.

What have you learned through your volunteer experience?  Have there been any surprises? I have been surprised at how genuinely open and eager residents are to work with volunteers, especially when sharing personal stories about sensitive topics such as finances. You start as strangers, but become emotionally connected so quickly when working towards a common goal that could significantly help someone's life.

What do you like best about volunteering with Eden Housing? The managers of the volunteer program make it a seamless process for volunteers through their excellent communication, organization, and available resources. Everyone involved is so helpful and encouraging!

Are there any tips that you would share for someone else who is considering volunteering? People may often have the misconception that volunteering may require a substantial time commitment, but there's a volunteer opportunity out there for everyone, even for just one or two hours a month. I suggest that when you are deciding on a volunteer opportunity, if you consider your particular interests or skills, or have an idea of whether you would enjoy working with individuals or groups, the volunteer position you choose might be more meaningful.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I immigrated from Vietnam when I was four, and lived in Memphis, TN for several years before moving to California for college with a strong Southern accent! It was a great surprise when I volunteered with Eden Housing and they matched me with a resident who was originally from Memphis!
