Property Description

Wheeler Manor was built as a hospital in 1929 and remained in operation through 1989. This national registered historic building was designed by California architect William Weeks in the Mediterranean style. When it was built, it was the only hospital in the state equipped with nurse call buttons in patient rooms. While the hospital had since been converted to affordable housing, the emergency call system has been upgraded for use by the senior residents.

Wheeler Manor added a newer Building B senior housing complex in 1993. A renovation in 2018 preserved important historical components of the original hospital including the original foundation and walls, clay tile roof, double hung windows, arched entrance and tile inlay from the original structure.

Senior residents make use of activity room, community room with kitchen, dining room, fitness center, library and on-site laundry. The exterior offers gardening boxes and a landscaped courtyard with a gazebo. A new satellite senior health center operated by On Lok joins Live Oak Adult Day Care to provide vital services on-site. Public transportation is nearby and sidewalk-lined streets encourage residents to walk the quiet, surrounding neighborhood.
